The Division of Neuroradiology/Head and Neck Radiology performs all the radiological and imaging procedures related to the nervous system, head, neck, and spine. It is staffed by eight neuroradiologists, two head and neck radiologists, four neuroradiology fellows and three combined (hybrid) fellows. The main hospital Jefferson inpatient facility includes a 1.5 and 3 Tesla MRI units, four spiral CT scanners, including two 64 detector and one 256 detector scanners as well as an interventional 64 detector CT scanner, myelography, staff offices, reading rooms, and a conference room. Additional outpatient equipment includes six 1.5 T MRI units, two open MRI units, and two spiral CT scanners as well as a state-of-the-art PET/CT.
The nearby Jefferson Hospital for the Neurosciences has two dedicated bi-plane Phillips angiographic and interventional units, a 64 slice spiral CT, a linear accelerator, a Gamma Knife unit, a 1.5 and 3.0Tesla MRI units. These systems have advanced physiologic MR capabilities including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), proton MR spectroscopy (MRS), time resolved angiography, CSF flow physiology, functional MR (fMRI), perfusion and arterial spin labeling (ASL) and functional connectivity (FC). Jefferson neuroradiologists cover this facility. This dedicated Neuroscience hospital is one of the largest and most productive in the region with expertise in neurovascular (open and endovascular), tumors of the central nervous system and advanced spine therapeutics.
The Jefferson Neuroradiology/Head and Neck Radiology division is highly active clinically, in close collaboration with the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Rehabilitation Medicine (which runs a widely recognized spinal cord injury service). The neuroradiology division provides custom imaging protocols and interpretations to serve the vast array of Jefferson clinical subspecialists. This includes the Brain Tumor Center, The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the Comprehensive Traumatic Injury Program, the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley, the Minimally Invasive Cranial Base Surgery Center, the Movement Disorders Program, the Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center, the Headache Center, Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, Opthalmology - at the Wills Eye Hospital and the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Program.
Head and Neck Radiology is part of the Division. A large variety and volume of facial, sinus, orbit, temporomandibular joint and neck cases are referred for radiologic evaluation from the busy Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The fellowship is extremely hands-on; fellows are immersed in the clinical environment through participation in multidisciplinary conferences with clinical teams and the vast exposure to the large array of interesting pathologies and disease entities presented. Fellows work one-on-one with one or more faculty on a given day, yet the fellows are expected to manage the clinical service under supervision of faculty. There is a large digital lecture library containing over 800 didactic lectures covering all aspects of Neuroradiology, Head & Neck Imaging and general radiology as well as a digital teaching file that contains over 9000 unique Neuroradiology/ENT cases. Fellows are expected to contribute to the educational process by preparing case vignettes and resident lectures.
Fellows will become competent in interpreting CT and MRI studies, protocoling and management, and post-processing of advanced imaging studies (e.g. perfusion, DTI, spectroscopy, CTA), myelography, lumbar punctures and leak studies. At the conclusion of the training, fellows will have received a valued set of interpretive, leadership and decision making skills that will continue to be of use in clinical practice.
